About This Calculator

This tile and flooring calculator helps you figure out exactly how many tiles you need to cover a rectangular floor. Enter your room dimensions in feet or meters, your tile size in inches or centimeters, and a waste percentage to account for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. The calculator also tells you how many boxes to buy based on the number of tiles per box. A 10% waste factor is standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone patterns may require 15% or more.

FAQ

Why should I add a waste percentage?
Tiles break during cutting and installation. Edges and corners of a room require partial tiles, and some tiles may have manufacturing defects. A 10% waste factor is standard for simple layouts. Use 15% for diagonal patterns and up to 20% for complex designs like herringbone.
What are common tile sizes?
Popular floor tile sizes include 12×12 in, 18×18 in, 12×24 in, and 24×24 in. In metric, common sizes are 30×30 cm, 45×45 cm, and 60×60 cm. Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines but more waste at edges.
Does this include grout spacing?
This calculator uses the tile dimensions you enter. Grout lines are typically 1/16 to 1/4 inch wide and have a negligible effect on the total count for most rooms. If precision matters, subtract the grout width from each tile dimension.
Can I use this for wall tiles too?
Yes. For wall tiles, enter the wall width and height instead of room length and width. The math is the same — the calculator computes the area and divides by the tile area.
