About Wallpaper Rolls

Wallpaper is sold in rolls with standard dimensions that vary by region. American single rolls are typically 27" wide × 27 feet long (about 60.75 sq ft total, ~36 sq ft usable after trimming and waste). European rolls are 53cm wide × 10.05m long (about 57 sq ft total, ~34 sq ft usable). If your wallpaper has a pattern repeat, you'll waste more paper aligning the pattern between strips — this calculator adds extra rolls to account for that. Always buy 1-2 extra rolls for mistakes, repairs, and future touch-ups.

FAQ

What is a pattern repeat?
The pattern repeat is the vertical distance between where the pattern starts repeating. A 21" repeat means the design repeats every 21 inches. Larger repeats mean more waste when matching patterns between strips. A "0" or "free match" pattern (like textures or solids) has no repeat and wastes the least paper.
Should I buy single or double rolls?
Most wallpaper in the US is priced per single roll but sold in double rolls (a continuous bolt of 2 single rolls). This gives you longer strips and less waste. Always check the roll dimensions on the label and calculate based on the actual coverage per bolt you receive.
How many extra rolls should I buy?
Buy at least 1-2 extra rolls beyond the calculated amount. This covers cutting mistakes, alignment errors, and future repairs. Wallpaper from different production batches (dye lots) can have slight color differences, so it's better to have extras from the same lot.
How do I measure for wallpaper?
Measure the perimeter of the room (total length of all walls) and the ceiling height. Count standard doors (about 21 sq ft each) and windows (about 15 sq ft each) to subtract from the total wall area. Measure in feet or meters — this calculator handles both.
