About This Calculator

This calculator computes your Grade Point Average on the standard US 4.0 scale. Each letter grade is converted to a numeric value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.), multiplied by the course’s credit hours to produce quality points, then divided by total credits. Plus and minus grades are supported (e.g. A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3). You can also enter your existing cumulative GPA and credits from prior semesters to see your updated overall GPA.

FAQ

How is GPA calculated?
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours. Quality points for a course equal the grade’s numeric value (e.g. A = 4.0) multiplied by the number of credit hours.
What is the 4.0 scale?
The 4.0 scale is the most common grading system in the US. An A earns 4.0 points, B earns 3.0, C earns 2.0, D earns 1.0, and F earns 0. Plus and minus modifiers adjust by ±0.3 (e.g. B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7), except A+ which stays at 4.0.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA combines all semesters. Enter your prior GPA and total prior credit hours in the optional section, and the calculator merges them with your current semester to produce an updated cumulative GPA.
Do plus/minus grades matter?
Yes. On the 4.0 scale, an A- (3.7) is lower than an A (4.0), and a B+ (3.3) is higher than a B (3.0). Over many courses, these differences can noticeably affect your GPA.
