About This Calculator

The Date Difference Calculator is a versatile tool for anyone who needs to measure time spans or shift dates. Common use cases include:

  • Calculating age or the time between two events
  • Counting days remaining until a deadline or expiration
  • Finding a future or past date by adding or subtracting days
  • Project management and sprint planning
  • Legal and financial date calculations (contract durations, interest periods)

All calculations account for varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years. The date difference is computed using calendar math, stepping through years, then months, then remaining days for an intuitive human-readable result.

FAQ

How is the date difference calculated?
The calculator steps through calendar units: it first counts complete years, then complete months, then remaining days. This mirrors how people naturally think about date spans (e.g., "2 years, 3 months, and 15 days"). Total days are computed from the actual millisecond difference, and weeks, hours, and minutes are derived from that total.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes. The calculator uses JavaScript's built-in Date object, which correctly handles leap years (February 29) and varying month lengths. A span that crosses a leap day will reflect the extra day in the total count.
Can I calculate business days?
This calculator counts calendar days, not business days. It does not exclude weekends or public holidays. For business-day calculations you would need to subtract weekends and any applicable holidays from the total day count.
